IE 7 UserAgent string change

Just read on the IE blogs that MSFT have decided to change the IE user-agent string which may/may not break existing applications.

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0b; Windows NT 6.0)

If your worried your applications will break you can modify your browser's user-agent and start using it to see what happens. Instructions are given on the blog, personally i'm writing this right now on a modified IE6 faking IE7 instance and not noticed anything. I've seen some websites which detect upto IE6 only give me different pages but apart from that in the past 20 minutes nothing too radical.

MSN 7 Meegos... Do you err.... MSN?

I bought my first bunch of Meego's today for MSN 7, a cool hip hop DJ spinning that sheeet and a rapper... no I dont do either but I wanna look cool so i thought what the hey...

I have a feeling in a few weeks/months when people start looking into what Meego's are it'll get popular. For those of you who dont know, MSN 7 ships with something called "Meego", in essense its a Flash file which gets transfered across the wire instead of a boring static picture of some hot babe (ok boring no, static yes!). MSN hope it will start a revolution - like SMS/MMS for mobiles - and create a marketplace to buy meego's people make.

Heres the main meego site... you can create your own cute little meego and use that if you want... but i kinda wanted something original:-)

Go on try it out! Just for kicks heres a freeze frame from mine:

yep... thats definatley me... DJ 2Shan rockin da house...

Upgrade to Windows XP 64bit for free! (+$22 for shipping)

A couple of days late with this one :( Microsoft are giving existing Windows XP 32bit customers the abillity to get a free copy of the 64bit edition (+$22 for shipping and handling - atleast for me in Australia - otherwise $12 for domestic). So if you have the hardware you can upgrade to a sexier 64bit world...

Things to note:

A) You cannot install 32bit drivers in Win64
B) You cannot expect all your devices to work properly or have proper drivers - especially old/generic devices
C) 32Bit software will still work, however emulated depedning on your hardware (either hardware emulation, or WoW software emulation).

But in iether case its the future...

Standup for the unions... screw the VSU!

If your an australian student stand up for student unionism and stop *ANOTHER* mistake in the Federal Government's plans. I dont know how many times I've told people, howard government brings nothing but lies and deciet... and people *still* voted for that ass wipe...

The SU is an important part of any university, just because in Howard's days (how long ago was this? 50?) all they did was most likely smoke pot and socialise - hmmm howard or costello socialising... hard to think about that... - and the occasional rocking up to lectures and studying... atleast thats what George Bush Jnr did most of his time... It doesnt give the government any right to take away this generation's uni life and more importantly voice. Students in this day and age go through sooo omuch more crap - most of which is the federal government's problem in the first place - and we need people/orgnasations like the SUs to look after the students and give them a voice.

For example, when concession cards jumped to $70 something it was the SU that stood up for students and eventually got it back to less than the $10 we pay now. If we loose such people we're loosing our voice against the wider world.

Just got this email from our student union... Be there... or be square...

Dear valued members of the SSU,

You have probably heard by now about VSU / ASOL (Pronounced ***-Hole).

This legislation introduced by the Federal Government will as from January 01, 2006 shut down student organisations or significantly alter the services they offer. You have probably heard it all by now, however bluntly put, this will change the very way students experience their education whether you are doing Higher Education or TAFE.

A brief list of student services likely or definitely on the chopping board:

- Student Activities (Free Bands, BBQs, Food etc)
- Student Representation (Where we support you in case you fail a subject or think that you have been marked unfairly)
- Student Cafeterias (Student Budget Meals and discounted foods)
- Swinergy (Swinburne Sports: sold off or prices skyrocket)
- Student Funding for Clubs (Radio Station/Magazine/Religious & Social clubs etc) Standing Committees (SISA / SUPA)
- Student Advocacy (Those transport concession card prices didn't drop from $72 to $8 by accident!)

Tomorrow on the 28th of April, 2005 the Swinburne Student Union will be shutting its doors. The reason this is occurring is that the National Day of Action, called by the National Union of Students is tomorrow. Staff and Student Representatives from the Student Union will be marching in the city, as will thousands and thousands of students from all over Australia. We will be rallying to show our vocal opposition to the federal government and their disgraceful legislation that will affect our way of life.

This is one of the many activities that will be carrying out to try to stop this legislation from going through. We need only 2 senators in the Senate in August to not vote for this legislation and we will have won the battle. The more pressure we can put on these people to represent what the majority of students think - the greater chance we can continue to run student organisations effectively. Additionally, the day the government represents what the majority of students think - will also be a victory for democracy.

This is your chance to make a difference and I applaud you to come tomorrow to the rally. Even Swinburne management are in support of this. There is going to be big music festival as well, with bands, comedians and thousands of students from all over Victoria who think just like you.

"How can I go?"

Its like all the good stuff happens around April... We've had Beta 2 of Whidbey, updates to yukon, FixPack 3 for HotHTML 3(shameless plug) and now Longhorn Build 5048 for WinHEC!

Theres already pics floating around the web and I have a feeling someones *cough* winbeta *cough* going to leak it sometime soon, but to all those good people, check your MSDN Subs you'll have some new ISOs to download and enjoy:-)

GCC v4.0 Released! (Optimising is the craze!)

Forgot to post this on Friday, GCC v4.0 was released on Wednessday and from the change logs it seems this release has been "Juiced up" compared to previous releases...

I havent as yet tried comparing 4.0 with my funky 2.9.x release I use but from what I've seen on the web, there are claims of 25% increases in speed thanks to some compiler optimisations... whats more they are aiming to go a step further with them for v4.1:O

Take a look at DevC++ for a good free open IDE:-)

HotHTML 3 FixPack 3 released!

Well after a long long wait - almost a month after Beta testing finished - I've finished FixPack 3 and uploaded it to the WebSoftware website.

This new release is quite a milestone, it brought massive - truely massive - changes to the core of the editor, which resulted in many changes and lots of testing to ensure nothing breaks (especially plugins). One major area i've tried to address is startup times. Compared to pre-FixPack 3 (Download FixPack 2 for a benchmark) the startup times should atleast be half of what it used to be or sometimes even less. The initial loading of the new version straight after installation will always be slower than subsequent times - it builds the GUI for the first time and creates default caches etc which does take time, but I'm happy to say that on some machines - Centrino P4M 755/1GB RAM -> 1.0 Second or less (Notebook) for instance - the load times are so fast its insane!

While working on this release I remember back when HotHTML 2000 was the 'thang' I actually made the splashscreen forcefully stay atleast 2 seconds before showing the editor because it loaded too quickly. My how those days have changed.

Download a copy of the final FixPack 3 release and enjoy!

Looking ahead to FixPack 4

I've been doing some extensive work since FixPack 2 back in November 2004 about allowing Mozilla and IE web controls to be loaded in the IDE and I'm finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel to get this supported. Basically using IE as a means to show a preview is great, but having that optional Mozilla preview will be beneficial for everyone. Using a slightly modified Mozilla ActiveX control i've got this to work on private builds of HotHTML 3, so its something that will appearing in FP4.

Thats it for today, tomorrow's ANZAC day here so I'm going to take the day off and relax a little. Atleast this weekend wasnt as crap as the last:-)

Deep Windows: Windows NT Cache Manager (CacheMan) Channel9 Video

Leading on from the Windows Kernel episode from Channel9's Deep Windows series, this new video goes to talk about the Windows NT Cache Manager developed by Molly Brown. The manager is a kernel subsystem or kernel-mode routines that basically works hand in hand with the file system to cache whatevers in memory. doing this efficiently can greatly improve performance of applications.

One interesting fact is that from Windows XP, the windows registry now makes use of MM as well as Server 2003 but virtually any stream of bytes can be cached.

If you want to dig deeper yourself heres an article from Mark Russinovich that delves into what CacheManager does and how it does it.

The attack of the Delivery Notification Failures = Spoofing emails on catchall accounts:(

For the first time in ages I left Outlook unopenned for more than 5 hours and when reopenning it and checking for new mail I was pleasantly surprised:

it was all from our catchall account that basically redirects any non-real email addresses to one account that gets heavily filtered (obviously not enough filtering) for SPAM. But it looks like the new generation of spamware hitting us is spoofing email addresses on domains and sending delivery failure notifications back and forth... imagine the load on servers:O

The best thing to do is to disable catchall accounts, but it doesnt seem viable for some companies/domains that rely totally on such things... i usually append the domain into any email address i have so i can check/make sure they dont sell my info to someone else - so registering at site abc532.com i'd use thushan.abc532[at]wsoftware[dot]net instead of just thushan[at]wsoftware[dot]net...

painful death and even more painful death again to all spammers, may you all rot and burn in hells hell!

UNHOLY COW: Adobe and Macromedia to merge:O

I saw this and nearly fainted. Adobe is going to buy out Macromedia according to their press releases:

http://www.macromedia.com/macromedia/proom/pr/2005/adobe_macromedia.html

http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/invrelations/adobeandmacromedia.html

SAN JOSE, Calif. - April 18, 2005 - Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) today announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion.

The combination of Adobe and Macromedia will provide customers a more powerful set of solutions for creating, managing and delivering compelling content and experiences across multiple operating systems, devices and media. Together, the two companies will meet a wider set of customer needs and have a significantly greater opportunity to grow into new markets, particularly in the mobile and enterprise segments.

Thats one mamoth merger!

An article by PCWorld discusses the changes we expect to see in longhorn including some of the changes, approximate release schedules and new features coming around the corner (in this case a very long corner ~ dec 2006).

FixPack 3 Compeition ends, release by Monday 18th April 2005.

Well I've been ubber busy with uni but we officially stopped counting bugs on the first of april and any reports there after were'nt included for the Gift Certicate offer we had going. Congratulations to Georgina Stein from Indianapolis for being the top reporter with a total of 48 fixes and change requests filed. She tells us that she'll be spending the $75 to buy some books on ASP.NET and UML from Amazon!

At the moment I'm updating the documentation as well as writing up a "Getting Started with HotHTML 3" guide (in PDF) both of which should be finished by the end of the week after which the final build testing will be done over the weekend making Monday the 18th the hopeful day of release for FixPack 3.

Microsoft VBRun (VB6 / VB.NET resource site on MSDN)

Microsoft have launched VBRun - VB 6 Resource site - at MSDN. Take a look here. This i guess means they'll keep making articles on "Classic VB" instead of just .NET as they have been doing in teh past.

Uni work sux... Ohh and MSN Messenger 7 Final is out!

Channel 9 Dave Probert : Windows Kernel (Very cool!)

If you dig and crave Kernels your going to love this MSDN TV video on the Windows Kernel. Dave is the Architect of the Windows Kernel and and in Part I we see some of the background info on (himself) and on the Windows NT Kernel and how (*finally*) Microsoft are making the effort to open up the Windows kernel to uni students who still only get taught the way of the *nix...
