Blog moved to WordPress and new domain...

I've moved my blog to my own domain and onto a WordPress engine, CS + SPAM was driving me nuts!

Catchup posts: Oh yes, I've been in Japan for a couple of months, first 2 weeks of photos are uploaded on Flickr, I still havent had a chance to upload the thousands after.

Whats more, I've actually written some information about me so you can finally find out my sad sad way of life. See About Thushan Fernando.

HOWTO: Changing the default browser in Visual Studio.NET

I've grown fond of Opera the last few years, it seems like even though i've firmly planted myself into the shoe's of Firefox I'm finding the continuously growing memory foot print a little hard to swallow at times (having to constantly restart Firefox isnt ideal no matter how much RAM you have), especially when your working with several Visual Studio instances. So I've resorted to using Opera, a lightweight finely tuned browser when working on a recent PHP->ASP.NET port for a project at work.

Question is, how *do* you make it the default browser in Visual Studio.NET? Its not as intuitive as you would have figured, but dead easy:
  • Right click on a ASPX page in your solution and select "Browse With..."
  • Click Add and find the browser you want (or if its already in the list ignore this step).
  • Select "Set as Default"
  • Thats it, click Browse and you'll be fine and dandy.
Sweet!

FIX DIRECTSHOW: 'Class Not Registered' 0x80040154 error code

A friend at work was having some issues with his dev box today, working in video means we're constantly messing around with DirectShow filters, capture devices etc. etc. So things break every now and then and we deal with it like normal _sane_ developers (i'll leave you to think of how thats done).

Today however when we uninstalled a certain capture card software (that shall remain nameless...) he found that almost all his filters and video decompressors were messed with. Attempting to use them in GraphEdit would give the dreaded 'Class Not Registered' error message. So being the cool people we are, we got a copy of Paul Glagla's Filmerit and had a looksy. To our surprise there were almost 50 broken filters. So naturally we went through and tried to register them manually. But no luck.

Then I had a double look at what Filmerit was trying to say (now this screen shot is a reproduction of what happend, not the exact shot from his box!):

Filmerit 3.08 Dialog showing broken filters - caused by me on purpose.
Filmerit 3.08 Dialog showing broken filters - caused by me on purpose for 'emulation'.

Notice the 'Server File' has an error, this isnt the 'filter' thats causing it but rather the container itself. The uinstaller had some how managed to unregister a core DirectShow component. Naughty naughty (now do you see why I didnt mention the company name?)!

So now I checked my machine to see which file its meant to goto, turns out its 'qcap.dll' is the culprit (which is in your system32 folder). Register this component and voilla! all those broken filters will be fixed! To be sure, unregister the component first and then force it to be registered again.
C:\>regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Windows\System32\qcap.dll"
C:\>regsvr32.exe "C:\Windows\System32\qcap.dll"
Note, that Filmerit wont fix an issue with DirectShow itself, only for broken filters.

Safari on Windows, Just another browser to add to the test suite.

If you think that having Safari running on Windows will reduce the need to run Safari on the Mac think again! We just had an issue that would render fine on Safari on Mac but faulter on Safari on Windows. Sure its Beta but I dont think we can safely assume that if it works in Safari-On-Win that its going to work on Mac (and vice versa).

*sigh* adds a new test case scenario to our test suite.

And for god sakes Apple, stop freaking using your OSeX UI in a Windows environment - this is WINDOWS, atleast offer the option to use native themes/look-and-feel for those of us who dont find your UI usable.

I think Apple just rushed out a pre-Alpha build of Safari JIT for WWDC, I've got constant crashing, heavy memory foot print (one such incident involved the browser at 729Mb - which in FF would take alteast a good days worth of use to reach!) and some strange issue with text not appearing on web pages.

Hidden Leonardo Paintings Discovered by Scientists

Got bitten by the Davinci Code bug? Keep remembering Leonardo for some-reason? Have nightmares about the "other" Leo (DiCaprio)? Well now witness the greatest coverup in history by Leonardo himself for the artsy-fartsy crowd:
Source: TimesOnline(UK)

Beneath one of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous works have been revealed to the public for the first time after scientists discovered the provocative images under a thick layer of paint.

A bloody skirmish between knights, a clutch of figures rebuilding a ruined temple and even an elephant were carefully laid out by Leonardo in the preparatory “under-drawing” for his Adoration of the Magi.

In the version of the painting known to the world, in which much of the underdrawing is reproduced, these elements have been hidden.
View the site to see the pictures, quite extraordinary - and good timing too.

If you have seen the Davinci code trailer, you may pickup that when the guy goes "witness the greatest coverup in history" you see a shot of Tom Hanks with a wig... Co-incidence?

COOL Trailers: Davinci Code / The Secret

Been over a month since the last trailer was posted, but heres one from the upcoming movie Davinci Code, staring Tom Hanks. Its the second full-length trailer, the first can be seen on Apple's website. The second trailer (hosted by Vividas has an auto-sensing bandwidth selection, so gone are the days of selecting high-medium-low-dialup, now the player will detect and manage the connection/buffering.

PPV: The Secret

The first ever Pay-Per-View (PPV) full-length movie premier and ofcourse its by Vividas, You'll have to watch the trailer to see what its about, but notice that unlike the previous clip, this player comes with a set of basic controls so you can pause/play and skip forward/rewind. If your dying to know the secret you could always pay 4.95 and watch the movie online or pay $19 and buy it on DVD.

VIVIDAS: Where the Bloody Hell Are you plus the spoof!

I was holding off posting this but I cant help it now that a Spoof of the famous "Where The Bloody Hell Are You" ad has come out.

COOL Trailers: Tooheys - For the Love of Beer!

Well its been quite a while since the last trailer i posted powered by Vividas, this is hot off our Vividas NSW guys. Our biggest and most popular streaming video would be the BigAd by Carlton Draught, well Toohey's have just made a commercial to directly compete with the BigAd, and its just as Big and funny...

Checkout For The Love of Beer.

If you think that was good, checkout the Stolen Glass Recovery Unit (SGRU) for Tooheys Extra Dry, funny ass commercial!

COOL Trailers: Fun with D1ck and Jane / Lion the Witch and Wardrobe

Well this month's cool trailers are two funky new movies about to be released (or maybe have been, havent checked).

Fun with D1ck and Jane

First up is a Jim Carey comedy (what else?) with Tea Leonny in Fun with D1ck & Jane. For more info checkout Fun with *** & Jane on IMDB.

Plot Summary: In Columbia Pictures' larcenous romantic comedy "Fun with D1ck and Jane," D1ck (Jim Carrey) and Jane (Téa Leoni) are in love and living the American dream - until one day it becomes an American nightmare. When the company D1ck works for becomes involved in an Enron-like scandal and he is confronted with the prospect of losing everything, D1ck and Jane are forced to bag, borrow and steal to get it all back.

Clips
There are some nice clip from the movie (wrapped in a trailer-oriented advert):
  • D1ck talks Cars
  • D1ck at the ATM
  • Jane's Aerobics Class
  • Jane's Beauty Tips
  • D1ck & Janes Coffee Run

View the trailer!

The Lion the Witch And The Wardrobe
C.S. Lewis's epic tale I first read/watched in Grade 2 or 3 much to my excitment has been remade. If theres a few things I recall from my primary school years, its this movie and The Never Ending Story (remake anyone?). Checkout the Official site for more info!

View the trailer!

Enjoy! Remember that these trailers are powered by the Vividas Player. (NOTE: D1ck is spelt with a 1 because of filters)

Bill Gates gets streamed... in VIVIDAS format... WHAT THE?

Well its about time, Bill Gates recently gave a talk at Engage 2005 in the UK about how High Definition is going to change the face of marketting, the organising company behind it decided to adopt the Vividas format to stream some of the talks, including one by the man himself Mr. Bill Gates.

Bill Gates Viv'd

There are some interesting parts where he talks about "the future". he starts off by reminising about the "dream" he had about getting everyone in the world have a PC and making it easier to use, when he was 19, and assure's us that they are on their way of making that a reality. But some of hte more interesting "predictions" come later on about phones, newspapers and tablet Pcs, which can not only show news but come in the form of a $400 student "all in one bookcase" for school and many other cool parts...

definately worth a watch, but its long so spare about 20-30mins...

COOL Trailers: Serenity / IBM Ad

We'll I think I'll start a new part that has some of the more interesting trailers that stream in Vividas format every so often (maybe once a month)... so to get things started...

Serenity
We've got the first 9minutes of the movie in VIV (Vividas) format to view right here. Take a look, the TV Trailers made the look look like *** but after watching this I'm so going to watch it this weekend;-)

IBM
What is Big Blue doing these days I hear you ask? Consulting ofcourse! This video's pretty well done, quite comical too.

Make sure when you run the player that  no Windows Media Player instance is in the background (or anyother movie  software -PDVD etc), if you notice a slow down thats probably that in the background...

Change of Jobs, working at Vividas - Video Streaming technologies!

Its mighty cold here in VIC - lot more than usual... not as cold as the UK i'm sure! - so cold that its even snowed in the Dande's... But the change of weather came just in-time with my change in Jobs.

I no longer work for *that* company that I cant name (no its not WebSoftware!) but as of Tuesday I'm now apart of the Vividas crew.

Vividas is the company behind 'Vividas Player' (Suprise!) which is a video streaming platform (powered by VP6/VP7) which is very much like (to dumb things down) quicktime or Windows Media Player for streaming content, only with a twist. Its ultra fast, compact, installation-requiremente-requireded-no and very bandwidth efficient. Dont believe me? Ohhh so what now you think i'm lying to you? You of all people? Fine be that way...

Checkout some of the cool videos here(full screen under HIGH/MEDIUM, windowed in LOW):
Some of the big names that have adopted Vividas include Lexus(which I'm considering changing to from Subaru's - in my dreams), Jaguar (no chance of me getting one of these yet!) apart from the above. The decoder - written in C/C++ with a healthy mix of ASM - is around 250-300Kb. Most of the internals is hush hush so I cant reveal much, but what is interesting is the uptake of broadband across the globe and the future prospects of HD-Quality video streaming and where this technology is headed.

Its a big change from the predominantly .NET/Vx/Web stuff I've been doing the past several years but its new and an area of interest to me and definately different. I'll be sticking close to the Win32/Win64 environment though;-) Go see the videos for yourself!
